About QuantStock

Our Mission

QuantStock is dedicated to democratizing access to advanced financial tools and algorithms. Our platform provides investors with sophisticated portfolio optimization techniques based on Modern Portfolio Theory, enabling data-driven investment decisions without requiring advanced mathematical knowledge or programming skills.

The Platform

Our web platform is designed to host multiple Python-based financial applications. The first application available is our Portfolio Optimizer, which allows users to find the optimal allocation of assets based on historical performance data. The platform is built with scalability in mind, allowing us to add more financial tools in the future.

Technology Stack

Frontend

Built with React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS for a responsive and intuitive user interface. Interactive charts are powered by Chart.js.

Backend

Powered by Python 3.6.15 with financial libraries including pandas, numpy, yfinance, cvxpy, and matplotlib for data processing and optimization algorithms.

Data

Real-time market data is fetched from Yahoo Finance via the yfinance library. User preferences and simulation history are stored in SQLite.

Algorithms

Implementation of Modern Portfolio Theory, efficient frontier calculation, and optimization techniques for maximizing Sharpe ratio or minimizing risk.

Modern Portfolio Theory

Our portfolio optimization is based on Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT), developed by Harry Markowitz in 1952. MPT is a mathematical framework for assembling a portfolio of assets such that the expected return is maximized for a given level of risk.

Key concepts from MPT implemented in our platform:

  • Asset diversification to reduce portfolio risk
  • Correlation between assets and its impact on portfolio risk
  • The efficient frontier of optimal portfolios
  • Risk-adjusted return measurement (Sharpe ratio)

About Black-Litterman Model

The Black-Litterman model, developed by Fischer Black and Robert Litterman at Goldman Sachs, enhances Modern Portfolio Theory by combining market equilibrium with investor views. This approach helps solve key limitations of traditional optimization:

  • Reduces extreme allocations that can occur in traditional optimization
  • Provides more intuitive, stable portfolios that better match investor expectations
  • Allows explicitly incorporating your views on specific assets with varying levels of confidence
  • Uses market capitalization as a starting point (prior), then adjusts based on your views

This advanced approach is particularly valuable for investors who have insights about specific markets or assets but want to maintain diversification and risk control.

Future Development

We are continuously working to enhance our platform with additional features and applications:

  • Factor analysis and smart beta portfolio construction
  • Advanced backtesting capabilities with various market conditions
  • Monte Carlo simulations for portfolio projections
  • Integration with additional data sources for fundamental analysis
  • Machine learning models for market prediction
